Organizing the Paper

The thesis statement is included in an introductory paragraph. The introductory paragraph is your chance to capture the interest of the reader. In the mice and elephant example above, you may want to provide a surprising or interesting leading sentence. An example could read, “besides their difference in size, elephants and mice share more similarities than differences.” The introductory paragraph can conclude with a few sentences that allude to the significant topics discussed later in the paper.

Introduction

Once you have an introductory paragraph written, you should highlight the thesis sentence. This will allow you to reference the thesis as you write. Everything that you write after the introductory paragraph must directly support the thesis statement. Do not forget to remove the highlight before you submit it to the instructor.

Supporting Paragraphs

Writing You should follow the introductory paragraph with several supporting topics. The rule of thumb is to include at least three supporting topics. The assignment length will help you judge how many supporting topics you need to include. Each supporting topic should be followed by evidence that supports the topic and thesis.

Conclusion

Hand on computer keyboardYou always follow the supporting paragraphs with a conclusion. This is where you want to reinforce that your thesis statement is correct. Start by reiterating your thesis statement and briefly review the key points of each supporting topic, one by one, and reinforce why they are significant. Conclude the paragraph with a discussion that brings everything together. Never introduce new evidence or knowledge in the conclusion.

Reference Section

KeyboardThe last section of your paper should include a reference section. There are many styles and formats that could be used to create a reference section. You will need to ask your instructor what format they prefer.

As a college student, you need to keep in mind that the standard five paragraph essay is not the end all be all for every writing assignment. Most assignments will require many more supporting paragraphs. You may also find the need for additional thesis statements that respond to multiple assignment questions and criteria. Although the structure and length may change, the basic logic of the essay will not.
